Humanoid Robots Enter Classrooms as "Physical AI" Test Begins

Artificial intelligence in education is taking a new step beyond software. Schools are now beginning to explore the use of humanoid robots often referred to as "physical AI" as interactive learning companions capable of communicating, answering questions, and engaging with students in real time.


One of the most notable pilot programs is taking place at Altus Schools in San Diego, where administrators invested approximately $500,000 in two AI-powered humanoid robots designed to support classroom learning. One of these robots, Ameca, stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and can adopt different educational personas, including "Sage the Teacher," which assists with academic instruction, and "Remi the Wellness Coach," which focuses on student well-being and emotional support.


Unlike traditional educational software, humanoid robots combine conversational AI with facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, and physical presence. Supporters believe this embodied form of artificial intelligence may increase student engagement, encourage participation, and create more natural interactions between learners and technology.


Advocates also see potential applications beyond classroom instruction. Humanoid robots could provide individualized tutoring, language practice, STEM demonstrations, accessibility support for students with diverse learning needs, and additional educational resources that complement the work of teachers.


Despite the excitement surrounding these innovations, many education experts urge caution. Researchers emphasize that there is currently limited large-scale evidence demonstrating that humanoid robots significantly improve academic outcomes or are consistently safe and effective in everyday classroom environments. Questions remain about long-term learning gains, student dependence on AI, privacy, emotional attachment to technology, and the overall impact on social development.

UNESCO researchers have echoed these concerns, noting that while embodied AI may feel more engaging and interactive than traditional digital tools, it remains unclear whether these experiences translate into measurable improvements in academic performance or deeper understanding.


The emergence of humanoid robots also raises important questions about the future role of educators. Most experts agree that these technologies should be viewed as instructional tools rather than replacements for teachers. Human educators provide empathy, mentorship, ethical guidance, creativity, and meaningful relationships qualities that remain essential to student development and cannot be replicated by technology alone.

As schools continue experimenting with physical AI, careful evaluation will be essential. Pilot programs will need to measure not only student engagement but also academic achievement, emotional well-being, equity, privacy, and long-term educational value.
